Fungsi dan Penggunaan Correlative Conjunction “Not only… but also”

Not only… but also merupakan correlative conjunctions. Fungsi dari not only, but also adalah menyajikan dua informasi berbeda ke dalam satu kalimat, namun tetap menjaga strukturnya agar seimbang dan luwes. Dalam bahasa Inggris, hal itu disebut dengan parallelism.

Perhatikan contoh dibawah ini:

informasi 1: Andy is good at singing.

informasi 2: Andy is good at dancing.

Penggabungan: Andy is not only good at singing, but also good at dancing.

Perhatikan bahwa setelah not only terdapat verb phrase berupa good at singing, sehingga yang menyertai but also juga harus berupa verb phrase (good at dancing).

Jika yang mengikuti not only merupakan noun phrase, maka noun phrase juga harus digunakan untuk mengikuti but also. Perhatikan kalimat dibawah ini:

1. A successful digital strategy is not only about producing content, but also make sure that the right content is reaching the right people. (kurang tepat)
2. A successful digital strategy is not only about producing content, but also about making sure that the right content is reaching the right people. (tepat)

Kalimat no. 1 kurang tepat karena kata-kata setelah not only merupakan noun phrase, sehingga kata-kata yang menyertai but also juga harus berupa noun phrase. Namun dalam kalimat no 1, kata-kata yang menyertai but also merupakan verb phrase.

Dalam kalimat no 2, kesalahan sudah diperbaiki dengan mengubah kata-kata setelah but also menjadi noun phrase.

Terdapat berbagai macam cara penulisan corelative conjuctions ini dalam kalimat. Untuk penegasan atau penekanan, biasanya not only di letakkan di awal kalimat.

Ketika hal ini dilakukan, kita harus mengubah penempatan subject dan verb. Verb diletakkan langsung setelah not only, diikuti dengan subject kalimat :

Kalimat awal:

1. They will paint not only the outside of the house, but also the inside.
2. The test was not only complicated, but also illogical.
3. She not only forgot to do her homework, but also let the door unlocked throughout the night.

Menjadi:

1. Not only will they paint the outside of the house but also the inside.
2. Not only was the test complicated, but also illogical.
3. Not only did she forget to do her homework, but she also let the door unlocked throughout the night.
